In 1971, Georges POMPIDOU, President of the Republic (France), asked Yaacov AGAM to design and create the layout of a lounge at the Elysée Palace. This lounge, a true work of kinetic and mobile art, demonstrated the President of the Republic's desire
to integrate contemporary artistic creation into the life of the nation. It is currently on display at the Georges POMPIDOU National Center of Art and Culture.
Yaacov AGAM's work is also known to the general public thanks to several works created in France, including the "Monumental Fountain" built at La Défense and which is presented as the culmination of the capital's triumphal axis starting from the Louvre. This fountain, a living work of art, an aquatic fairyland, a true "firework water" combines gushing and music, rhythms and water games.
Born in 1928, the son of a rabbi, Yaacov AGAM arrived in 1951 from Israel to Paris, where he set up his creative center.
A pioneer of kinetic art, he devoted his efforts to integrating the fourth dimension into his paintings and sculptures: he introduced time as a constituent element of the work. It is in this spirit that he applies his methods to the visual arts as well as to literary, musical and cinematographic research.
By approaching his work, we enter the secret complexity of a new art that focuses more on noting movement than on
fixing the moment, the work being oriented towards the search for ways to express all the mobility of life.
On the occasion of the issue of his "Message of Peace" stamp, the artist told us: "The biblical story tells of the destruction of the world. Noah was barely saved. Now, the world is currently in a similar situation since at any moment it can be destroyed by the unleashing of contemporary weapons. "But an agreement was made between Noah and the Almighty so that the world would no longer be destroyed: this agreement is the rainbow.
This symbol represents for me Art that carries its message beyond the horizon. Art is of universal scope, because artistic and visual expression, unlike verbal expression which requires translation, is a language understood by all. "Art, a message of beauty and communication ... "This stamp is like the world where multiple rainbows are linked together, expressing the hope of dialogue and fraternity.
