About Carroll Shelby

Few individuals have left a greater mark on American performance automobiles than Carroll Shelby.

Born in Texas in 1923, Shelby first gained international recognition as a world-class racing driver, competing for Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati, and other prestigious manufacturers. His greatest driving achievement came in 1959, when he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans driving an Aston Martin DBR1.

After health concerns ended his driving career, Shelby turned his attention to building cars. In 1962, he created the first Shelby Cobra, combining a lightweight British AC roadster chassis with powerful Ford V8 engines. The result became one of the most celebrated sports cars ever produced.

Shelby's reputation grew even further when Ford selected him to lead its GT40 racing program. Under Shelby American's direction, Ford achieved one of the most famous victories in motorsports history by defeating Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, ending Ferrari's dominance and cementing the GT40's legendary status.

Shelby also developed the iconic GT350 and GT500 Mustangs, helping define the American muscle car era. Today, his name remains synonymous with performance, innovation, and racing excellence.
