GT 40 Legends — Artist Proof Edition | Signed by Carroll Shelby, Dan Gurney & Artist Danny Day

One of the most celebrated subjects in endurance racing history, captured in stunning detail by one of motorsport art's most respected names — and signed by two of the legends who lived it.

GT 40 Legends is a limited-edition acrylagraph on canvas, published in January 2005 from the original oil painting by Danny Day. The composition is a masterful layering of GT40 history across a single canvas. In the upper left, rendered in the black and white of memory and archive, are the three GT40s that swept Le Mans 1–2–3 — one of the most dramatic moments in motorsport history. Moving into the foreground, full color brings the story forward: the iconic Gulf Oil blue and orange of cars #5 and #6 dominate the lower half of the painting, while the fire-engine red #1 Ford MkIV takes center stage — the very car driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt to overall victory at Le Mans in 1967. It is a painting that spans the entire GT40 era in a single glance, rich in color, detail, and historical significance.

The piece offered here is from the Artist Proof edition — a designation reserved for the finest impressions in any limited edition, traditionally the standard against which all others are measured.

The Edition The worldwide edition of GT 40 Legends consists of 600 impressions total, published by Hallmark Press, Inc., divided as follows:

  • Regular Edition — 400
  • Artist Proofs — 100
  • Publisher's Proof — 100

Each piece is individually hand-signed and numbered by the artist Danny Day, Carroll Shelby, and Dan Gurney.

The Signatures Carroll Shelby built the machines that rewrote Le Mans history, ending Ferrari's stranglehold on the race with Ford's historic 1–2–3 sweep in 1966. Dan Gurney didn't just witness that history — he made it, co-driving the winning #1 Ford MkIV to overall victory at Le Mans in 1967 alongside A.J. Foyt. His signature on a painting that depicts that very car, on that very subject, carries a weight that few pieces of motorsport art can match. With Shelby now gone, signed examples of his work grow increasingly scarce — a piece bearing both his signature and Gurney's is a genuinely rare find.
