The Significance of the 1966 Chaparral 2E
The 1966 Chaparral 2E is one of the most innovative race cars ever built. Designed by Jim Hall and Hap Sharp for the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, better known as Can-Am, the 2E changed racing history with its dramatic high-mounted adjustable rear wing and advanced aerodynamic thinking.
At a time when most race cars relied primarily on mechanical grip, the Chaparral 2E helped introduce the modern concept of aerodynamic downforce. Its large rear wing was mounted high above the car in clean airflow, helping increase grip and stability through corners. The 2E also used a driver-controlled aerodynamic system, allowing the wing angle to be adjusted while racing.
The result was one of the most advanced and recognizable racing cars of the 1960s. The Chaparral 2E scored a famous one-two finish at Laguna Seca in 1966, with Phil Hill and Jim Hall behind the wheel, proving the effectiveness of Hall's revolutionary design.
Today, the Chaparral 2E is remembered as a turning point in motorsports engineering and a landmark in the development of aerodynamic race cars.
Phil Hill – World Champion, Le Mans Winner, and Chaparral Driver
Phil Hill was one of the most accomplished American racing drivers of all time. Already famous as a Ferrari factory driver, Formula One World Champion, and three-time Le Mans winner, Hill later became closely associated with the innovative Chaparral racing program.
Hill's remarkable accomplishments include:
1961 Formula One World Champion
Three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans
Multiple Sebring victories
Factory driver for Ferrari
Chaparral driver during the groundbreaking Can-Am era
Phil Hill's connection to the Chaparral 2E gives this lithograph special historical importance. His signature links the artwork directly to one of the most innovative race cars he ever drove and to one of the boldest periods in American sports car racing.
