About Carroll Shelby

Carroll Shelby was one of the most influential figures in motorsports and automotive performance history — a race driver, automotive designer, constructor, and entrepreneur whose name became synonymous with American high performance.

Born in Texas in 1923, Shelby first gained international recognition as a racing driver during the 1950s, competing for legendary marques including Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Maserati. His greatest achievement as a driver came in 1959 when he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans driving an Aston Martin DBR1.

After heart problems forced his retirement from driving, Shelby turned his attention toward building high-performance sports cars. In 1962, he founded Shelby American and created the legendary Shelby Cobra by combining a lightweight British AC chassis with powerful Ford V8 engines. The Cobra quickly became one of the most famous and successful American sports cars ever built.

Shelby’s racing achievements expanded dramatically when Ford enlisted him to help develop the GT40 program to challenge Ferrari at Le Mans. Under Shelby’s leadership, the Ford GT40 achieved its historic domination of Ferrari, culminating in Ford’s legendary 1-2-3 finish at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

He also developed the iconic Shelby Mustang GT350 and GT500 performance cars, forever changing the image of American muscle and performance vehicles. Shelby remains the only individual to win Le Mans as a driver, constructor, and team manager.

Today, Carroll Shelby is remembered not only as a racing champion, but as one of the most important innovators in automotive history.
